The Academy of Food & Wine (previously "Academy of Wine Service") was established in 1988 to develop skills in the hospitality industry. We are delighted to announce that Martin Straus has been appointed Director of Regional Development, with the brief to extend membership and activities across the UK, starting with a pilot scheme in Central England. The Academy grew out of the Guild of Sommeliers, of which Martin was Chairman of the Hertfordshire Branch in the early 80s, and subsequently was the first training officer for the Academy of Wine Service.

The apppointment carries with it membership of the Board of the AFW, subject to ratification by the Board later this year. The Academy is currently administering an exciting opportunity for restaurants and other catering establishments across England, Wales and Scotland - a gastronomic competition for chef/wine waiter teams with a prize of a two week trip to European food & wine regions.
